Yesterday and today in class, students have been watching selected scenes in the film and gathering examples of film techniques to use as evidence in their essays about the film.
Students watched carefully for specific film techniques that were used to show:
- The idea of Social rivalry
- Characters
- realtionships
- important decisions
- Setting
Specific film techniques we discussed were:
- Camera angles, shots and movements
- Dialogue, music and sound
Specific scenes we watched were:
- The opening scene - which establishes the three main characters, Ponyboy, Johnny and Dallas (Dally)
- The park scene - where Ponyboy and Johnny fight the Socs, and Johnny stabs a Soc
- The scene in the church where Ponyboy and Johnny change their appearances to where they watch the sunset and Ponyboy recites the poem "Nothing gold can stay"
- The fire scene - where Ponyboy, Johnny and Dallas save the children from the burning church
- The rumble scene - where the Greasers fight the Socs
- The scene where Johnny dies
- The ending - from Dallas being killed to Ponyboy reading Johnny's letter
