Recreating Ideas

Soon we are going to start thinking of ways we can recreate ideas from the film into either static images or monologues.
The internal achievement standard 90059 assesses how students can take an idea from a text and build from that an image or a monologue.
We are going to spend one week looking at the techniques of a monologue and one week looking at the techniques of static images.
Near the end of term two, we are going to re-craft our ideas for the assessment of this standard.
For now, we need to think about one idea we saw in the film and how we can build on that to create an effective image or monologue.
Add a comment below to suggest good ideas from the film...

Gathering Evidence

Yesterday and today in class, students have been watching selected scenes in the film and gathering examples of film techniques to use as evidence in their essays about the film.
Students watched carefully for specific film techniques that were used  to show:
  • The idea of Social rivalry
  • Characters
    • realtionships
    • important decisions
  • Setting
Specific film techniques we discussed were:
  • Camera angles, shots and movements
  • Dialogue, music and sound
Specific scenes we watched were:
  • The opening scene - which establishes the three main characters, Ponyboy, Johnny and Dallas (Dally)
  • The park scene - where Ponyboy and Johnny fight the Socs, and Johnny stabs a Soc
  • The scene in the church where Ponyboy and Johnny change their appearances to where they watch the sunset and Ponyboy recites the poem "Nothing gold can stay"
  • The fire scene - where Ponyboy, Johnny and Dallas save the children from the burning church
  • The rumble scene - where the Greasers fight the Socs
  • The scene where Johnny dies
  • The ending - from Dallas being killed to Ponyboy reading Johnny's letter
Below, students are going to comment on the techniques used in these scenes.
